Bertine Strauss is perfectly placed to win her first Sanlam SA Women's Amateur Strokeplay title after a second round 72 moved her to within striking distance of leaders going into the final round at Royal Cape Golf Club.

On current form, top SA ladies Rustenburg's Bertine Strauss and Kim Williams (Centurion), both on +1, should be battling it out for top honours at the Sanlam SA Women's Amateur Championships to be played at Royal Cape Golf Club from 19 to 24 April. However, this event may be remembered as the tournament when, for the first time, women golfers from six African states threatened to present a strong challenge to their South African hosts.

WGSA President Erica Lefson announced today that Ashleigh Holmes, Pam Hayward and Marné Roos will represent South Africa at the Regional All Africa Challenge Tournament to be played in Swaziland from 29th April to 4th May, 2009.

With only four weeks to go to the Sanlam SA Amateur Championships, Kim Williams showed her intent when she won the KZN double at Kloof Counry Club with a convining 4/3 win over North West's Suné du Plooy.

Top SA golfer Bertine Strauss won the Western Province Match Play championships at Rondebosch today when she defeated Stroke Play champion Yvette du Plessis 5/4 in the 18 hole final.

Western Province's Yvette du Plessis won the Western Province stroke play championship at Rondebosch today on a three under par 141 (68, 73) against a field which included 14 of the top 16 on the South African amateur ranking. One stroke back was 17 year old Bertine Strauss on 142 (71, 71) and Kim Williams picked up the third spot on 143 (71, 72).

WGSA welcomed three new Provincial Presidents to the Executive this month - Vaughn Harrington, Myrlene Pieterse and Evie Stott.

Eastern Cape's Tanya Tibshraeny recorded convincing wins on her way to victory in the Border match play championship played at East London Golf Club this week. Lauren Bekker, runner-up in the stroke play, was once again the bridesmaid when she lost 6/5 in the final to Tanya.

KwaZulu Natal's Pam Hayward won the Border Championships played at East London Golf Club on Sunday 8 March, two strokes ahead of Lauren Bekkker from Gauteng.

Gauteng North's Kim Williams ran away with the North West Championships when she returned a two under par 142, four strokes ahead of North West's Elru Botha on 146 with Henriette Fylinck (Gauteng North) and Alana van Greuning (Mpumalanga) on 147.

Women's Golf President Erica Lefson this week announced the opportunities for international travel by South African amateur golfers during 2009.

Gauteng North Daisies were awarded the Team of The Year at the Golf Digest awards dinner held during the week of the Vodacom Championship at a Sandton venue.

Young Bertine Strauss was awarded Women's Golf South Africa's Player of the Year at the prestigious Compleat Golfer Awards dinner held at Vodaworld, Midrand on 19 February 2009. At the same ceremony, a special award was presented to Vivian Horak who served Womens Golf for 11 years subsequent to serving her Province on their Executive and as President.

Bertine Strauss edged out Tiffany Avern-Taplin to claim the Eastern Cape Match Play Championship which was completed at Humewood Golf Club this week. In the B Division 16 year-old Katlego Mhlambi beat Charlotte Humm while Jenny Ririe picked up the C Division Championship when she defeated Sue Barton.

North West Province's Nicole Becker picked up the first Order of Merit points of 2009 when she won the Eastern Cape Championships on 154 (76,78) in foul weather with stormy winds and rain. She was two shots clear of Ashleigh Holmes (79,77) and Bertine Strauss (81, 75) on 156.

The WPGA advise that the SA Ladies' Open has been reinstated and will be played from 10 - 12 March 2009 at the Parkview Golf Club. The practice day will be on 9 March.

In a very exciting sudden death play-off, Connie Chen snatched the Gauteng North Junior Championship from Gauteng's Yushira Budhram on the third play-off hole at Irene Country Club on Sunday 25 January. Both girls had scored four over par 148 to go into the play-off. SA Junior Champion Bertine Strauss finished two strokes back on 150.

South Africa's top junior golfers, Bertine Strauss and Connie Chen were included in the group of 60 top internationals to compete in the inaugural Annika Invitaional, played at the Ginn Union Resort in Orlando, Florida from 16 to 19 January 2009.
